This marks a significant breakthrough after over two years of conflict, focusing initially on a temporary truce, hostage releases, and partial Israeli troop withdrawals. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the deal via Truth Social, calling it a “GREAT Day” and crediting the mediators for making this “Historic and Unprecedented Event happen.” President Trump may travel to Egypt this weekend to oversee implementation.
The deal builds on Trump’s 20-point peace proposal unveiled last week, which includes phased ceasefires, hostage-prisoner exchanges, Israeli withdrawals from Gaza, Hamas disarmament, and a transitional international administration for Gaza reconstruction.
Negotiations were finalized during indirect talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, involving U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, alongside senior officials from the mediating countries.
This initial stage prioritizes de-escalation and humanitarian relief, with subsequent phases to address permanent ceasefire terms, full withdrawals, and Gaza’s governance. Ceasefire will be in effect within 72 house of signing, if the Israeli government signs off the deal. Hamas to release all ~48 remaining Israeli hostages (up to 20 believed alive, plus bodies of ~28 deceased). Initial focus on living hostages in a single batch. There will be a subsequent prisoner release of 1,700–2,000 Palestinian prisoners/detainees, including high-profile figures like Marwan Barghouti. Israeli Withdrawal to an agreed upon line will enable return of refugees. Egypt/Qatar to oversee distribution of humanitarian aid, food medicine and reconstruction materials to prevent delays.
United States: Led by Trump, who personally engaged leaders like Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Envoys Witkoff and Kushner bridged gaps on troop maps and timelines. Trump may travel to Egypt this weekend to oversee implementation.
Egypt: Hosted talks in Sharm el-Sheikh; focused on aid corridors and prisoner lists. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi emphasized “maximum pressure” for compliance.
Qatar: Provided financial incentives for Hamas (e.g., reconstruction funding) and hosted Hamas leaders. Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani confirmed “all provisions” agreed, but stressed guarantor states must enforce Israel’s adherence.
Turkey: Used its influence over Hamas (via Erdogan’s direct calls) to push acceptance. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expressed optimism for a Thursday signing
