Jerusalem, Israel: Walking Where Miracles Happened: The New Discoveries in Capernaum bringing the Bible to Life.
Imagine standing on the exact shore where Jesus walked, healed the sick, and called His first followers. Recent archaeological digs in Capernaum—known in the Bible as “His own city”—have just uncovered a massive, first-century stone port.
For centuries, scholars knew this Galilee town was a busy fishing hub. But finding this ancient dock gives us a breathtaking, physical link to the days when Jesus lived and ministered right there by the water.
Where the Miracles Unfolded
This discovery brings the famous stories of the Gospels off the page and into the real world. Think of the incredible moments that happened right along these shores:
- Healing Peter’s Mother-in-Law: Just steps from the water, Jesus visited Peter’s house in Capernaum and healed a sick woman with a simple touch of His hand (Matthew 8:14-15).
- Lowered Through the Roof: In this same town, friends showed unstoppable faith by lowering a paralyzed man through a roof so Jesus could heal him and forgive his sins (Mark 2:1-12).
- Calming the Storm: From this very area, Jesus and His disciples would step into boats to cross the Sea of Galilee—including the unforgettable night He stood up in a raging storm and commanded the wind and waves to “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39).
Why It Changes Everything
These newly uncovered stones are a powerful reminder. The Gospel stories aren’t legends or myths; they happened in real places, to real people, facing real pain and joy.
When we look at the ruins of Capernaum today, we aren’t just looking at old rocks. We are looking at the backdrop of divine love in action—where heaven touched earth right on the shores of Galilee.
