Cairo, Egypt: For Dr. Augustinos Samaan, explaining his Christian faith online has reportedly led to imprisonment, abuse allegations and a five-year sentence with hard labor in Egypt.
Samaan, a Coptic Christian researcher and apologist, built an audience of more than 100,000 subscribers through videos about Christianity, Islam and comparative religion. His supporters say his work focused on answering questions about Christian belief and responding to anti-Christian messages through peaceful discussion.
That changed in October 2025, when Egyptian authorities arrested him. Reports say officers confiscated hisphone, laptop, books and personal papers. He was initially accused of terrorism-related offenses, but those charges were later replaced with allegations of “contempt of religion” and “misuse of social media” under Article 98(f) of Egypt’s Penal Code.
Samaan was held in pretrial detention for months while his detention was repeatedly renewed. Rights groups and Christian organizations say he experienced mistreatment and abuse during this period, including humiliation and alleged torture. They have also raised concerns about his physical and mental health.
In January 2026, he was sentenced to five years in prison with hard labor. His supporters say the proceedings raised serious questions about due process. According to reports,Samaan’s family and legal team went to court expecting a routine detention hearing, only to learn that he had already been tried and convicted.
They reportedly had not been given timely access to the case file or a full opportunity to present a defense.
His legal team has appealed the conviction, arguing that no one should be imprisoned simply for peacefully expressing religious beliefs.
International advocates say the case highlights the danger of laws that can be used to punish religious speech, particularly when the accused belongs to a religious minority.
For many Christians watching the case, Samaan’s story is deeply painful. A man who used books, videos and public discussion to explain his faith now faces years behind bars. Hissupporters say his work was not a call to violence, but an attempt to answer difficult questions and defend what he believes.
The case has also renewed concern about the treatment of Coptic Christians and other religious minorities in Egypt. While Egypt’s constitution includes protections for religious freedom, rights groups say blasphemy-related laws continue to be used against people for online religious expression.
