We’ve spent years arguing over whether the future of money is digital, crypto, or cash. But according to Elon Musk, we’re asking the wrong question.
Musk recently dropped a bombshell: Money itself is becoming irrelevant.
Instead of looking at currency, he suggests that true wealth in the future will be measured by two raw, physical things: Wattage and Tonnage.
What does that even mean?
Put simply, Musk is moving the goalposts from “finance” to “physics.”
Wattage = Energy. Think about AI. Massive AI models don’t run on money; they run on electricity. If you control the energy (the wattage), you control the intelligence and the power of the future.
Tonnage = Matter. Whether it’s mining asteroids or building cities on Mars, you need physical materials. The ability to move and own raw mass (tonnage) is the only way to actually build a civilization.
In short: We are moving from a world where we trade symbols of value (like dollars) to a world where we trade actual value (energy and materials).
It sounds like science fiction, but it’s a total paradigm shift. It means “being rich” won’t be about the number in your bank app—it will be about how much power you can generate and how much matter you can move.
The dollar might be the king today, but according to Musk, the future belongs to the energy grid and the cargo ship.
