Dallas TX: A Strong Comeback: Mega Churches Draw Millions After the Pandemic. After the difficult years of the COVID-19 pandemic, something encouraging is happening in many large churches across America. A new study shows that mega churches — congregations with thousands of weekly attendees — have not only recovered but are growing stronger than before.
According to researchers Warren Bird and Scott Thumma from the Hartford Institute for Religion Research, America now has about 1,850 mega churches. Together, they welcome around 10 million worshipers every weekend. That’s roughly one in every six Protestant churchgoers in the country.
The report, called Megachurch Resurgence, found some hopeful numbers:
• 67% of these large churches now have higher attendance than before the pandemic.
• 84% say their congregations feel stronger today.
• 86% describe themselves as thriving and are optimistic about the future.
Many churches used the challenging pandemic years to adapt. They improved online services, tried new ways to connect with people, and focused more on community needs. As restrictions lifted, many people returned — and some brought friends and family with them.
Mega churches still make up less than 1% of all Protestant churches, but they serve a big part of the worshiping population. Their growth shows that after a time of isolation and uncertainty, many Americans are looking for connection, hope, and faith-filled community again.
This resurgence is more than just numbers on a page. It points to a desire for something greater — places where people can gather, worship, grow, and find purpose together. In a world that often feels divided, these churches are becoming beacons of renewed energy and spiritual life.
The story of mega churches after COVID is one of resilience and fresh starts. It reminds us that even after hard times, faith communities can rise with new strength and reach more hearts than ever before.
